Happy Lunar New Year!

This is Slick; she wants to say Happy New Year!

She is a snake I created when I was 15. I started with Sprout and decided he needed a gang of friends. I went through auditions with characters, call backs, and finally chose the cast of 7. This picture is missing a couple of people.

Slick started with some crazy dark eyes. I was going through a phase and these eyes were all over my sketchbooks. For this image of Slick I updated them to still have a similar feel but, look more like my currently illustrating. It’s odd to look back at these kid drawings! I am amused by my limited skill. I had had one art class at this point and my sketchbooks. There wasn’t a fully fleshed out art department at my high school because it was brand new and they hadn’t been able to fill out the facilities yet. My literary magazine teacher was the most encouraging to my drawing but, I was figuring everything out on my own with the How To Draw Books.

Do you think I was influenced by the Muppet Movie?

It’s fun to bring her back and look through my childhood sketchbooks. I think snakes are neat but, I’m actually rather fearful of them. However, I used to love them when I was a child. I had pet green snakes all the time as I found them around rocks on my Great Grandmothers land. However around 9 years old something happened and they started giving me the willies. To this day I wouldn’t want to have one as a pet but, I still think they can be beautiful and deserve more love.

From all of us Happy Valentine’s Day!

Eric Carle inspired painting of Valentine Bug Puppets. We watched Mr Carle painting one of his big canvases then got to work!

Spinosaurus

This page was sadly neglected in my sketchbook. I drew this image out early in my sketchbook planning. However, because I had left so many pages to complete close to deadline I put all of my focus into developing and completeing ideas for those. Then I ran out of time to go back and finish this image. In part because, I have complicated plans for this page and I didn’t want to develop it in a rush and leaving it potentially looking weird. To me it made more sense to leave it as a sketch with the promise of something to come. I am hoping to finish the image separately in the coming months.

This Dinosaur is the Spinosaurus. It is the size of a Tyrannosaurus Rex but, more like an alligator/crocodile with a giant fin on it’s back. I’m sure those of you that follow my blog understand why I love this dinosaur. Crocodile mixed into Dinosaur? Yes please!

It’s a fairly classic image idea. At the water line with a crocodile but, instead it’s a Spinosaurus. Nothing I have read suggests they swim like this but, I decided they must. It’s going to be fun to finish up this image.

Now the next few pages in the sketchbook have already been online.

However, since you all were so patient waiting to get your third sketchbook page I will show you an update to one of those earlier seen Dinos.

In December, as I made my Octopusnowflakes, I acquired a new and more amazing white pen. With it I was able to add white highlights to bring out the edges.

From here I plan to release my sketchbook pages on Tuesdays. I am setting up a more automatic system so you don’t have to wait. With a preschooler in the house between sickness and events we aren’t always consistent with free time. As I do this it makes me feel like I’m growing up. Getting more responsible with the blog, planning it advance.

A Sketchbook Welcome

Welcoming you to my sketchbook is this pink little T Rex, giving you the biggest smile he can.

Something compels me to make Dinosaurs pink or magenta. I don’t know what it is. I especially liked the idea of a Pink Tyrannosaurus Rex since they are the kings of the jungle. —I heard at one point that the T Rex may have actually been a scavenger. Even though it’s legs were strong, given it’s small arms, it may have only been an eating machine of the already deceased dinosaurs. This claim said they were the vultures of the dinosaurs.  I only heard that once and I’m pretty sure current thoughts do not go along with that now. —

Everybody has their sweet side.

Sketchbook Project 2013 Delivered!

January 15, the day the 2013 Sketchbook Project had to be postmarked, came upon me so quickly; it was almost as bad as the eminently approaching Christmas Time. As passing years have gotten me used to properly planning for Christmas I am still not used to a looming deadline just two weeks after it. My son has his birthday in the middle of January. Every year, so far, I have neglected to do any planning for a party until the day before New Years, when everything is closed. So I have to wait until January 2nd when they give you a dirty look for making plans at their establishment so close to when you want to have the event. So, as Matt and I scrambled to prepare a birthday party, get decorations, a guest list, and make a cake from scratch (because we don’t do many things the easy way) my sketchbook almost did not get finished.

Some of you may remember how I got an early start on my Sketchbook Project and was smartly working through my spreads in July and August. When there were no other looming personal deadlines. Once October got here the last half of the book was postponed until December and January. Additionally, to make all of this more fun, I got so sick I could hardly get out of bed for the first week of January.

From bed, while watching Doctor Who in the background(yes I have finally starting watching the show! I started with the 2005 seasons), I sketched up the remaining pages of my sketchbook. Even with the obstacles, I am incredibly happy with my results. This is my third book and it was the hardest to mail away to the Brooklyn Art Library. I will miss not being able to show it in hand to friends. So, I hope you will all go look for it when it visits your cities! It should be hard to miss, I decided to go ahead and attach glitter paper to the cover. You know Tony DiTerlizzi kept showing off all his glitter for his Christmas window, I felt we still needed more glitter.

The goal was reached!

I am so glad I got this sketchbook done. I hope you are able to spend some time with it and flip through all of the pages. For today I am only posting one spread. I think I will continuing posting one spread a week for a while and eventually, once it is digitized, link you to the Sketchbook Project’s official page for it. I think it is a nicer experience for seeing all of the pages together.

And as I post this I will tweet it and it will be my 6,000th tweet! Making it a big one. Let’s rock 2013!

Octopus Snowflakes

Happy Holidays from over here at CaseyG.com

I hopefully will be coming at you with a brand new regular schedule with more consistent art in the new year. Thank you for anyone still reading a long, I appreciate your patience.

It has been a year of lots of transitions and loss. I want share and write a full post about it but, it has been sitting in my drafts for 2 months. I’m just not sure I can properly sum it up into words I’m happy with. I believe the worst is over, life has turned to a much more even keel since mid December and I feel I can say with confidence the regular drawing is almost here.

Again thank you for patience those following along and all your support.

Now for some OctopiSnowflakes!

All the best for 2013!

APE Recap

Finally coming to you with my recap on Alternative Press Expo, San Francisco.

What a phenomenal show. I was amazed at the level of talent at this show. I left feeling totally energized and wanting to make art. That is how I want to leave every con. Matt, Lucien and I had a wonderful time and met a lot of new friends. (Lucien decided he wanted to come dressed a Leonardo for day two.) The support and friendly attitudes of the exhibitors was infectious. Even though it was my first time participating I felt welcomed. Emma SanCartier was gracious and helped me with my tabling duties so I could get lunch and short breaks.

My table neighbors were wonderful. Justin Thompson with Mythtickle, Brian Klom with Atomic Bear Press and just a table over was Bill Robinson. Bill and I both attended RIT and were Art House members. It has been a few years since we were in touch; we had a great time catching up. He was kind enough to make us an Octo-Puss in Boots.

And of course we have even more new Octo-Puss in Boots! Thank you all for contributing we love these new additions.

It truly was an honor and pleasure to meet all of you and chat as you created these beautiful sketches for us! I look forward to seeing you at future shows.

Finally a big thank you to Cody Williams for his Yeti! Yeti watches me while I work and keeps me on task. We have been partying since he arrived though; we only decided I should do work today. Hence my delay in posting my APE recap.

On a different topic I have contributed art to Elana K. Arnold for her new book Sacred. There will be an art show celebrating the launch of the book. See her blog post about my piece!

Specimens and Animals in Alphabet at APE 2012

We have been settling in the past couple of months and I have only had time to draw a little. This little time has been spent sketching characters from other books for Alphabooks! You can view those over on my tumblr. I am hoping that after October I am able to get back to my regular blog schedule over here. Send some encouragement if you miss the posts!

Before we get to new posts I have some news. This weekend my Animals in Alphabet and my specimens and me will be traveling to San Francisco to show at APE 2012.

For this show I am bringing the mounted Lizard Heads.

Here are some teasers:

Stop by and say hey! I would love to meet more of the folks out here on the West Coast. I am really looking forward to getting my chance to wander the tables to see all the amazing work that will be at this show.

Miggi’s Octo-Puss In Boots

A couple of weekends ago now–moving in caused some major disruptions in my schedule–I got to hang out with my friend Miguel Angel Cardona. We met in college and have reconnected this summer since we are both in the Bay Area. It has been great to hang out and sketch together.

The last time we visited he was kind enough to add an Octo-Puss In Boots to our book!

Miggi doesn’t consider himself an illustrator but, I think that is clearly a part of him. We are so happy to have his work as part of the Octo-Puss in Boots book.

It was great to get to sit, sketch, have coffee, and chat with a friend. I enjoyed the working together element, as we sketched we almost challenged each other to get more and more creative. I hope we can continue our sketch meet ups! Check out his recent coffee cups project.

On another note, we have moved into our permanent place in San Jose. We are almost all set up and a day to day schedule for time to draw should be falling into place soon. Hopefully this also means my regularly scheduled blogging will begin again. I’m clearly not as organized as some bloggers. Since, I didn’t set up automatic posting during the time I couldn’t ensure a weekly update. Maybe that will be a future goal! Pictures of the new studio to come, it’s not completely decorated yet, probably by next week. Until then.

Slow down, it takes a lifetime

I was once told a story about Picasso. He was in the park sketching people using only one line. A passer by inquired about it and Picasso drew them in one line in just about a minute. Awed the subject asked if they could have the sketch. Picasso said yes for $5000 or some other large sum. The person was taken a back and commented that it had taken Picasso so little time how could it cost so much. To which Picasso responded it took so little time because I spent a life time learning how.

(I know this may not be the exact story and he is known for saying “it takes a lifetime to learn to draw like a child” but this is what I heard and what has stuck with me)

I’m in the middle of my lifetime learning. Gotta practice, practice, practice.

BRING. IT. ON.

(my posts are going to be a little here and there until I get a new scanner. more frequent posts are happening on my tumblr and group tumblr CaseyG Draws and Fanartica. Follow along!)

Final Destination, Finally!

Boy tomorrow from Tuesday, turned into Friday fast. California time is way slower and laid back. We have apparently acclimated to it quickly or we have actually stayed rather busy the past couple of days. Two visits to Hicklebee’s thanks to twitter friends, meeting new friends at the pool, lunch with crafter friend Eling and husband Dane, and signing papers on a house!

First lets go back to June during which, I was pretty quiet online. The month was completely absorbed with packing (packing my studio took over a week!) and visiting with as many folks as possible. The last week in Boston I had three places to go everyday, this is not a complaint but, I spent every energy cell for traveling and socializing I had. I’m somewhere in between introverted and extroverted, I’m a loud mouth for sure! but, I need too-myself time. Generally I only plan three outings a week or just one place away from home a day, that could be as simple as grocery shopping. June was a special circumstance and I wouldn’t have done it any differently but, I am loving resting my brain with quiet sketching, endless podcasts and Friends, and teaching my son how to swim.

Of course when opportunities arise I take them. Visiting people is on the list of important to me. I don’t say no to friends visiting from out of town or new friends inviting me to fun local events. Getting out is a part of getting comfortable in a new place and not letting rest turn into zoned out from the world. Two of the friends met through twitter are helping make the transition into this area that I have been to twice very pleasant. Those being Tracy Bishop and Laura Zarrin. Thank you Tracy and Laura for inviting us into San Jose! This week they met up with me twice to go to Willow Glen, the home of Hicklebee’s. Willow Glen will be an easy drive from the home Matt and I are planning to rent. This morning we signed papers and as of August 5th we will begin the process of fully settling into San Jose.

In the mean time we are at an apartment complex living out of six suitcases. Originally we were supposed to be able to access our pod of stuff just a few days after we arrived in California but, that hasn’t happened yet. With only two weeks left until a full move in I’m enjoying figuring out how to get by with what we have. I feel very free having a limited supply of dishes, clothes, and towels to manage. Then per art supplies I have two sketchbooks, a pile of colored pencils and pens, and a travel watercoloring kit. I find with these limits I am actually sketching more because, I am not overwhelmed with all the options in my studio. There were a couple of needs, I left without a lap drawing surface and tracing paper. This gave me the opportunity to search out a local art store. I was looking for a small lap drawing board anyway and you can’t have enough tracing paper.

Outside of materials, I have found setting up wherever I can is the only new problem to getting creativity flowing. When you are sitting on a bed or couch instead of at a desk TV, books, and laying down to nap are harder to fight against. You are also missing that muscle memory that makes you comfortable and feeling like it’s time to draw. It hasn’t posed as an insurmountable problem. Getting started is still coming up against regular issues, online distractions, day to day responsibilities, and making sure to carve out time each day to draw.

Being in between places and moving to a new home is disruptive. You have to find a new day to day schedule. For me I think it could be a good opportunity. I don’t like sitting still so, I will fill my time with activities. This had happened while living in Boston as I rolled from a full time job into being a full time mom. Being that it’s what I’m used to I can see myself already beginning to look for this full schedule here. At this time in my life I would like to spend more time illustrating. To do this I am going to have to make it a priority and be sure it holds a big spot in my new schedule.

That doesn’t mean I’m not ever going to go out! This weekend I hope to make it up to San Francisco for Renegade. Another artist, who is selling there has shown me a warm welcome to the Bay Area, Emma SanCartier. And as a bonus two friends from Boston will be selling there too Mimi Kirchner and Eling whom I mentioned before. Lucien and I were lucky enough to get to have lunch with her and her hubby today.

I know I need to keep these outings in check but, I know that part of my creativity comes from the warmth and support of my friends. I am so grateful to have people reaching out and welcoming us. California is such a foreign land to me. Living on the East Coast is nothing like this. Yet I already am starting to feel at home. Thank you all for making this move easy.

ps after reading this blog post back to myself, I’m pretty convinced I am a full extrovert! I feel like being an introvert is a right of passage to being an artist. How did I become an illustrator? Who else proclaims they are extroverted?
